The majority of our visitors at the HKBM are families with young children. We thought about ways to prolong the discovery of Hong Kong species and their ecology once our tour is over and for our visitors to get a souvenir. As children (and artsy adults) love colouring, creating the first official Hong Kong Biodiversity Museum colouring book would offer lots of fun and learning opportunities. The book will introduce line drawings of 50 local HKBM specimens presented in their natural habitats so that visitors can first discover the animal in person in the museum and then picture how it lives in the wild. In addition, each page will include well-researched and fun facts, just like in the HKBM specimen showcase posts on social media. 

 

The author, Elvira Rey (artist penname Elvira Rex @erex_books) is an enthusiastic fan of palaeontology and scientific naming conventions. Elvira is a biology researcher in her final months of a PhD in Marine Environmental Science, with a strong passion for science communication and art. She has been an intern/volunteer at the HKBM for over two years, giving her much insight and the ability to pick out, write about and illustrate a great selection of specimens for the colouring book. Other than scientific papers and conferences, she is already a published colouring book author, with an animal biodiversity-themed children's colouring book published in Hong Kong last year.
 

Your generous (tax-deductible) donation will fund the author, if we can reach the goal of 180,000 HKD, to create the colouring book over a span of six months starting in summer 2024. These books are sure to bring hours of entertainment to children, and foster their appreciation for local biodiversity. Hong Kong is an amazing place absolutely teeming with wildlife which the new generations urgently need to discover and learn to respect and protect, and, with your help, we aim to provide all the tools we can to that end.
